The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall May 2010

Golden Richards is a sad man who is controlled by his four wives and twenty-eight children. He is having a bit of a mid-life crisis and what could be funny about that? Well, this book is hilarious and sad at the same time. It's a big fun, touching read. I highly recommend it. $26.95

I love Egyptian mythology and when I heard that Riordan was tackling this as his next project I was thrilled. I really enjoyed the interplay between the Kane brother and sister. I think it added a lot to the story. It was exciting and fun. $17.99

The Light: Morpheus Road Book 1 by D. J. MacHale
April 2010

This new book from D.J. MacHale is wonderfully creepy. In the very beginning of the book Marsh Seaver starts hearing and seeing small things that are just not right. The faucet drips, the lights go out and words appear in odd places. This subtle haunting is really scary. From there Marsh begins to be really haunted by his own comic creation, Gravedigger. When his best friend Cooper goes missing, he must team up with Cooper's sister Sydney. Together they must find Cooper and try not to get killed by Gravedigger. I can't wait for the next one.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson September 2008

This book was written for me. This is about a society of people (avouts) who consciously separate themselves from the outside world. They engage in Socratic dialogue. They discuss geometric proofs and what that means in terms of our perception of this book was written for me. This is about a society of people who consciously separate themselves from the outside world. They engage in Socratic dialogue. They discuss geometric proofs and what that means in terms of our perception of the universe. They discuss the possibility of multiple universes. When the outside world is threatened by an alien ship's arrival in orbit around their world the avouts are called upon to help deal with this threat. This is a big, wonderful book with so many great ideas that I would like to read it again. I love everything that Neal Stephenson writes and his fans are going to love this.

Artemis is trying to save his Mom from a fairy illness and has to go back and save an extinct lemur. Fun for all.”

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows September 2008

“This is a delightful book full of well crafted characters. This takes place in England after World War II. Juliet gets to know all the members of the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie society. They are as varied as the name of the group. The book is written in letter format and has an old time air about it. I very much enjoyed reading it.”

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson August 2008

"This is an astonishing book about love and its redemptive power. Our protagonist meets a woman who claims to have known him for 700 years and tells the story of their history together. This story is peeled back in layers leaving the listener and reader raw. It is powerful and wonderful."

Traveler by Ron McClarty April 2008

“This is an intriguing drama about Jono Riley, a man who revisits his tough Rhode Island neighborhood after the death of a family friend. Marie had been shot and wounded as a kid with the bullet remaining inside of her. The bullet (called a traveller) moved and killed her in middle-age. Jono gets caught up in the search to find the shooter who had shot others over the years too. The gritty characters are wonderful and the surprises interesting.”
