Dennis Lehane

Please consider how many books I read during the course of a year when I say that Darkness, Take My Hand was without question the best book I read in 1996.  It is the second in this series, following A Drink Before the War, featuring Boston P.I.s Angie Gennaro and Patrick Kenzie.  Both have brought a lot of baggage to the partnership--and it's often shaky. Lehane has said that he writes about flawed men and women trying to do the best they can in a flawed world.  He has certainly succeeded.   is books can be very dark, but they do not disappoint.

Mystic River and Shutter Island are not part of his series but are highly recommended.
