Michael Connelly

Former crime reporter Connelly introduced LAPD homicide detective Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch in Black Echo and won an Edgar for best first novel. Harry is the son of a murdered prostitute who named him for the 16th century Dutch painter because she liked one of his paintings. He spent his childhood in foster homes and served as a tunnel rat in Vietnam, so he's carrying some baggage. But once you start this series, you'll gobble them up like peanuts and bemoan the fact that there isn't a new one every month.

Start with the Bosch series and read them in order (they're listed in the books).  But don't read City of Bones yet.  Instead, go on to The Poet and Blood Work.  The latter stars Terry McCaleb, a retired FBI agent who is recovering from a heart transplant.  He's readying his boat to sail off into the sunset for a life of leisure, he thinks.  It would be a very short book if that were the case so, of course, he gets involved in finding a killer.   But there's a real twist here.  Then comes A Darkness More Than Night.  Connelly fans love this book because it brings McCaleb and Bosch together.  Now you are ready for City of Bones.  And with that ending, the big question is "What's next?".  Find out in Lost Light.
