Job Description

This position is the face and the voice of the Children’s Department for each of the local stores, being careful to support and build off the Anderson’s reputation as a leader in the Children’s Book world.

Since the Children’s Department supports readers from birth to age 18, qualified candidates should be well read, with the ability to discern appropriate content per age group.

In addition qualified candidates should be energetic, be able to multi-task, possess strong public speaking skills and be detail oriented. Candidates must be able to work well in teams but also show initiative in working on solo projects without supervision. Strong, clear communication skills are a must.

Job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support your local schools and school district as needed. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Outreach to the individual schools to introduce Anderson’s and the services that we offer.
    • Introduce the current Mock Newbery, Mock Siebert, and Mock Printz lists when available.
    • Host In-service Day book talks.
    • Host two Teacher-open Houses throughout the school year, one in the Fall, one in the Spring. This includes coordinating with the timing with the other Children’s Managers, scheduling, determining and presenting the books, coordinating CPDU credits that will be available to participants, any local promotion for event.
    • Process any educator orders as needed.
    • Serve as a resource for educators in helping match books to curriculum.
    • Must have a basic knowledge of ISBE State standards as well as local School Districts’ curriculums in order to best understand needs and which books will best fit those needs.
  • Plan, promote, and host Children’s Programing for the local store.
    • In-store Author appearances.
    • Non-author events such as story times or book groups.
  • Work in tangent with the other Children’s Managers and Store Owners on company-wide Children’s Programing.
  • Maintain Children’s title inventory.
    • Ensuring inventory turns through quarterly shelf checks and section pulls.
    • Order stock as needed that may not have been ordered through Front list ordering or may have been missed during restock. 
    • Be proficient in Edelweiss.
    • Stay current on future Children’s publications.
  • Coordinate with the other Children’s Managers and the owners as needed.
  • Book talk at Anderson’s Annual Children’s Breakfast and Young Adult Conference as requested per Becky Anderson.
  • Create and maintain individual Children’s Dept displays as needed for the local store, as well as any company-wide Children’s Displays.
  • Active participation on the Mock Newbery Committee.
  • Coordinate and maintain the annual Book Angel program for the local store.
  • Coordinate and engage local merchants in any Anderson’s community-wide events as requested by Store Manager.
  • Support the Sales floor as requested by Store Manager.
  • Support misc. events as needed.
  • Support off-site events as needed.
  • Support as requested by the local Store Manager or the Store Owners.
  • Basic housekeeping to ensure that the Children’s Department is engaging, lively and welcoming.
